alto sax – improvisation 2018-2019
in this improvisation track i’m focusing on the Region Improv. this is a Bb blues, using the iReal Pro play-along track. my goal was to improvise two choruses of contrasting style or approach.
- the first chorus is oriented to the minor blues scale, with a nod to the blues phrasing of threes – “1) i’m gonna tell you, 2) i said i’m gonna tell you, 3) it’s a low-down dirty shame…”
- the second chorus is oriented to the 8th note based jazz lines that are an essential element of learning to play jazz

this demonstration track for TENOR SAX focuses on 2019 TMEA Jazz Sax Etude 1, mm. 1-7. the elements I’m discussing are 1) air stream phrasing, 2) air accents, and 3) articulated accents. all of these are combined into the final run through of the track.
this practice-with-me track for TENOR SAX covers 2019 TMEA Jazz Sax Etude 1, mm. 8-13. the tempo goes up from half note=63, 73, 85, 95, and 105. my articulation does vary a bit as i’m still learning it myself. however, in measure 9 i definitely recommend tonguing the 2nd note and the 6th note in the measure as i find this helps the fingers and tongue align more consistently. [also, pardon the fan noise in the background!]
